Longest city naam

Home - Travel stories - Bangkok - Longest city naam

Bangkok is commonly known under the name Bangkok.
Nothing unusual.
But it is unusual.

In Thailand Bangkok is known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, often abbreviated to Krung Thep.
But this is not the complete name, that is:
Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit
Or in Thai script:
กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุทธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตนราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์
This means (according to the Wikipedia):
City of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarma

Krung Thep has a record:
it is the longest city name in the world.

Bangkok did relly excist, but when it became the capitol of Thailand, in 1782, the name was changed to Krung Thep.
