Home - Travel stories - Ko Samui - Introduction

Ko Samui is an island and a district in the province of Surat Thani. It is a very popular tourist destination. The island is as the crow flies nearly 500 km south of Bangkok, and 35 miles northwest of Surat Thani.

The island has an area of ??almost 230 km. Along the coast are the popular beaches, the interior is most uninhabited mountainous jungle. There is only one road, about 51 km long, that runs around the island, sometimes along the coast.

The easiest, fastest and most expensive way to get on Ko Samui is by plane. From Bangkok there are more than 20 daily flights, and there are also flights from places such as Krabi and Phuket. A lot cheaper is a flight to Surat Thani and from there by bus and boat to Ko Samui.
Other ways are by bus or train to Surat Thani, a journey of about 12 hours, and then by bus and boat to Ko Samui.
By car you are at least 10 hours on the road, about 700 kilometers, on four-lane roads, which are not equally good, quite tiring. And then another 1.5 hours by ferry. We have made ??a stopover on the way in Chumphon, and on the way back Chumphon and Hua Hin.

The coordinates are 9°30'N 100°00'E.

We have been there in February 2013.
